Orthodontics

At Dental Esthetique, we offer early orthodontic treatment for growing kids to treat a variety of dental issues found in developing teeth and jaws.

These problems include:

  • Crowded, crooked or misplaced teeth.
  • Protruding (“sticking-out”) teeth.
  • Increased overbite, underbite or crossbite.
  • Early or late loss of baby teeth.
  • Jaws that are not in proportion with the face.

The goals of early treatment are to encourage the jaws to develop to the correct size to make space for all of the permanent teeth and then positioning the jaws into their correct position during growth. Delaying treatment until after the majority of growth has occurred can make it more difficult to correct some orthodontic problems. For this reason, we follow the Australian Association of Orthodontists’ recommendation that a child be assessed for orthodontic problems by age 8 or earlier if problems are identified.

The dental and overall health benefits of early orthodontic treatment include:

  • Fixing crowding of teeth
  • Avoiding extractions of permanent teeth in most instances
  • Improving facial harmony and creating broad, attractive smiles
  • Reducing time in full fixed braces or avoiding need for braces
  • Reducing need for future jaw surgery
  • Reducing risk of trauma to protruding teeth
  • Promoting healthy airways and reducing the risk of breathing and sleep-related problems such as snoring and sleep apnoea
  • Minimising or avoiding jaw problems
  • Improving gum health

Where to start?

If you are interested in early treatment for your child or want a second opinion, then the first step is to book a consultation with Dr Thomas Flanagan.

Thomas is a general dentist with a special interest in orthodontics, in particular early treatment. At this appointment, Tom will assess whether early treatment is suitable for your child and if so, records will be taken to assess your child’s facial and dental development so that a specific treatment plan can be made for your child. Alternatively, our practice will refer to an Orthodontic specialist should it be deemed necessary.

The records process, & first appointment, is usually booked for around 30mins and involves: examination of face, teeth and jaw joints, clinical photographs of teeth, jaws and face, impressions of teeth, detailed medical history and dental radiographs to assess number and position of adult teeth. A second consultation will then be arranged to discuss the individual treatment plan for your child and answer any questions not covered at the initial consult.

*All surgical or dental procedures carry risks. Before proceeding, you may consider seeking a second opinion and/or consult your GP or appropriately qualified health practitioner.
